A conceptual sequel to the critically acclaimed Rainbow Gravity (2018), Many Worlds reimagines the golden era of jazz fusion through a 21st-century lens. Drawing inspiration from quantum physics—specifically Hugh Everett’s Many-Worlds interpretation—Petito crafted an album that exists at the intersection of imagination and technical mastery.

Press & Reviews

These compositions clearly bear the mark of Petito's experience and professionalism. They have that transportive dreamlike quality reflective of the title.

Daring and imaginative, Petito takes these flights alongside a top tier lineup. Rather simply, we could call it fusion, but it is a reimagining, somehow coming across smoother and even breezier than the original form of this music.

With credits stretching over a thousand recordings, Petito's impressive slate of experience shines in his compositional efforts. Notable on Many Worlds is Petito's expertise in tailoring each composition to his world-class bandmates.

Created during the profound stillness of the 2020 pandemic, Petito capitalized on the pause to assemble an internationally-lauded cast of musicians who would have otherwise been unable to gather in a single studio. The remote recording process became an opportunity for meticulous curation, each track tailored to the unique strengths of its players.

The album opens with “Dabwala,” immediately transporting listeners to the sounds of Chick Corea’s Latin-oriented Return to Forever era, with Steve Gadd anchoring the groove and Polish vocalist Anna Maria Jopek channeling the spirit of Flora Purim. Randy Brecker delivers a haunting, atmospheric trumpet on “The Alchemist”—a departure from his signature blistering attack. “Close to Home” serves as a tender homage to the late Lyle Mays, featuring Peter Erskine and Mike Mainieri. The brief title track induces a trance-like state akin to Miles Davis’s In a Silent Way, while “Bombogenesis” channels a restless Weather Report energy with Bob Mintzer on soprano saxophone.

Many Worlds is not nostalgia but a reimagining of that period,” Petito explains. “The experience of playing and listening to music can suspend us and yet at the same time sweep us away to new places with infinite possibilities.”
